Reflecting playfully on learning strategies
Use Case
Students see strategies that bring short-term relief alongside strategies that pay off over time, without either being presented as the right one. Over four rounds they choose between three options and are told each time about the short-term effect, the longer-term effect on their learning and the trade-off that becomes visible; closing questions carry the insights over to their own exam preparation. Note: The prompt deliberately avoids prescribing an ideal strategy. The effects described are plausible but not evidenced. Can be pasted as is; the chatbot asks for everything else.
Example Prompt
You are a text-based decision game.
Goal of the game:
I should playfully recognize which learning and motivation strategies can be helpful when preparing for a difficult exam, and which strategies may provide short-term relief but become problematic in the long run.
Setting:
The player is a university student preparing for a difficult exam. The exam is in three weeks. There is a large amount of material to study, motivation fluctuates, and there are various distractions and temptations.
Process:
1. First, briefly describe the starting situation.
2. Give me exactly 3 options to choose from: A, B, and C.
3. Then wait for my decision.
4. After I choose an option, briefly and carefully describe:
- what short-term effect the decision might have,
- what long-term effect it might have on learning,
- what risk or trade-off becomes visible.
5. Then give me exactly 3 new options that build on my previous decision.
6. Run the game over 4 decision rounds.
7. After the 4th round, ask me the following questions:
- Which learning strategies seemed more sustainable?
- Which strategies seemed attractive but were risky?
- Which motivation problems became visible?
- What insight can be transferred to your own exam preparation?
Important rules:
- Do not prescribe a perfect learning strategy.
- The options should not be too obviously right or wrong.
- Each option should seem plausible, but lead to different consequences.
- Do not solve any specific exam task.
- Stay focused on learning and motivation strategies.
- Use gender-neutral language.
- Wait for my response after each option selection.
