What is a chatbot?
A chatbot is a computer program.
You write a question to the chatbot.
The chatbot writes an answer back to you.
You can write to a chatbot like you write to a person.
But a chatbot is not a person.
A chatbot is a machine.
A chatbot works with artificial intelligence.
Artificial intelligence is a computer technology.
It lets a computer write texts.
The short form of artificial intelligence is: AI.
What is a prompt?
A prompt is a text you write to a chatbot.
The prompt tells the chatbot what to do.
Here is an example of a prompt:
Explain the word inclusion to me.
Use easy words.
Write no more than 5 sentences.
A good prompt tells the chatbot 2 things:
This is the job.
This is how the answer should look.
What is the Prompt Workbook?
Prompt Workbook is the name of this website.
A workbook is a book you work with.
The website has a lot of prompts.
It has more than 50 prompts.
All the prompts are examples.
You can use all of them for free.
The website comes from Universität Hamburg.
That is a big university in Germany.
People learn there and do research there.
Who is the Prompt Workbook for?
The Prompt Workbook is for 2 groups:
- People who teach at a university.
We call them teachers. - People who study at a university.
We call them students.
Teachers use the prompts for their teaching.
Students use the prompts for their learning.
Other people can use the prompts too.
Important: you need your own chatbot
There is no chatbot on this website.
This website only has the texts for a chatbot.
So you need your own chatbot program.
Universität Hamburg has its own chatbot program.
It is called UHHGPT.
UHHGPT is for people from Universität Hamburg.
There are other chatbot programs on the internet.
How to find a prompt
There is a menu at the top of every page.
The menu has 2 items:
- Home: this is the first page.
- All prompts: this page shows all the prompts.
There is also a search field at the top.
You can see a small magnifying glass.
You write a word in the field.
Then the website shows all prompts with that word.
At the top right you can choose the language.
You can choose German or English.
There are more links at the bottom of every page.
How to use the filter
There are a lot of prompts.
So the website has a filter.
A filter helps you to search.
The filter shows you only some of the prompts.
You do not see the other prompts any more.
You find the filter on the page All prompts.
For example, you can choose:
- Prompts for students or prompts for teaching staff.
- Prompts for a task in your studies.
- Prompts for a goal in teaching.
You can choose more than 1 thing at the same time.
Then you see even fewer prompts.
Click the button Reset filters.
Then you see all the prompts again.
How to use a prompt
You need 4 steps.
Step 1
Click on the name of a prompt.
The page for this prompt opens.
Step 2
Read the text under Use Case.
It says what the prompt is good for.
Step 3
Click the button Copy.
Your computer now remembers the prompt.
Step 4
Open your own chatbot program.
Paste the prompt into the chatbot.
The chatbot writes an answer.
You can change every prompt
The prompts are only examples.
A prompt may not fit your job.
Then just change the prompt.
Write the prompt the way you need it.
That is allowed.
Important: a chatbot makes mistakes
A chatbot often gives good answers.
A chatbot sometimes gives wrong answers.
The chatbot does not notice its own mistakes.
It writes wrong things in a very confident way.
So an answer can sound good and still be wrong.
Please check every important answer.
Ask yourself:
- Does the answer fit my question?
- Do I know myself if the answer is true?
- Where can I read more about it?
Are you not sure?
Then ask a person as well.
You are always responsible for the answer.
The chatbot is not.
Please note: the other pages are hard to read
Only this page is in Easy Read.
All the other pages use difficult language.
The prompts use difficult language too.
There is a reason for this.
The prompts are made for work at a university.
People at a university use a lot of difficult words.
You can ask someone to help you.
You can also ask the chatbot for help.
Write to the chatbot:
Please explain this text in easy words.
But please note: the chatbot makes mistakes here too.
Accessibility of this website
Accessible means:
All people can use the website.
Also people with a disability.
We work on accessibility.
We have tested the website ourselves.
We have already fixed many problems.
But no independent test office has checked the website yet.
So we say honestly:
This website is not fully accessible yet.
These things are still difficult:
- The search does not work well everywhere.
- Almost all texts use difficult language.
- There are no sign language films about this website.

A note about this text
We wrote this text in Easy Read.
People with learning disabilities have not checked it yet.
But they should always check an Easy Read text.
They tell us: I understand this part.
And they tell us: I do not understand this part.
