Accessibility Statement
This accessibility statement applies to the Prompt Workbook of the Hamburg Center for University Teaching and Learning (HUL) at Universität Hamburg, published at hul-prompt-workbook.uni-hamburg.de, in both its German and English language versions.
Universität Hamburg strives to ensure digital accessibility for people with disabilities. Our goal is to provide a fully accessible website in keeping with the provisions of the Hamburg regulation on establishing accessible information technology for people with disabilities (Hamburgische Barrierefreie Informationstechnik-Verordnung, HmbBITVO) dated 10 September 2019.
Conformance status
The accessibility requirements are based on section 1 of the Hamburg Accessible Information Technology Ordinance (HmbBITVO) in conjunction with sections 3(1)–(4) and 4 of the Federal Accessible Information Technology Ordinance (BITV 2.0), issued on the basis of section 11 of the Hamburg Act on Equal Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities (HmbBGG).
This website is partially compliant with these requirements. The currently known non-compliances are listed below.
This classification is based on a self-assessment most recently carried out on 9 September 2026 in the form of a technical expert review. The review used the harmonised European standard EN 301 549 in its applicable version; at the time of the review, EN 301 549 V3.2.1 (2021-03) was the version cited in the Official Journal of the European Union. The specific test standard was the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, conformance level AA referenced by that version. Methods included automated testing with axe-core, markup validation, accessibility-tree analysis, and manual or tool-assisted testing of keyboard operation, focus handling, contrast, reflow, text spacing, Windows Forced Colors mode, and operation without JavaScript. All page types were tested in both the German and English language versions.
No independent BITV audit by an external testing body has been carried out. Nor have systematic tests with different screen readers, browsers and assistive technologies or user tests with people with disabilities been carried out.
Non-accessible content
Integrated search
The search function is provided by the Quarto publishing software and is based on a third-party component. In the currently used Quarto version, the following structural limitations remain:
Interactive elements are technically nested in the result list: list items with the role
optioncontain independently focusable links. Screen-reader output may therefore vary between browser/screen-reader combinations. (WCAG 4.1.2 Name, Role, Value)This nesting is also detected by axe-core as
nested-interactivewhen the search dialog is open and results are displayed. The finding does not occur when the search is closed. The third-party component renders the opened search as a detached area outside the original
comboboxelement. As a result, the input field and result list are not DOM descendants of the element that exposes the combobox’s expanded state. This can affect how assistive technologies interpret the search, depending on the browser/screen-reader combination. (WCAG 4.1.2 Name, Role, Value)
Project-specific improvements include disabling single-character shortcuts, localising German and English labels, making the background inert while the detached search dialog is open, adding dialog semantics to the search overlay, returning focus to the search button after Escape and after activating “Cancel”, assigning an unambiguous name to the result list, removing invalid aria-activedescendant references when no result exists, providing sufficiently contrasting result highlighting, and adding an assistive-technology status message when a search returns no results. The remaining structural limitations are part of Quarto’s third-party component and are reviewed again when Quarto is updated.
As an equivalent access route, the “All Prompts” page provides filtering and sorting and does not have these structural limitations of the integrated full-text search.
Heading order on pages with a table of contents
On eight information pages, Quarto places the table of contents before the main content in the document tree. As a result, the table-of-contents heading “On this page” (h2) appears before the page heading (h1) in source and heading order. Each page still has exactly one h1, no heading levels are skipped, and the table of contents is contained in a correctly named navigation landmark; nevertheless, the ordering can make heading-based navigation less intuitive. (WCAG 1.3.1 Info and Relationships)
The Quarto version currently used does not provide a supported configuration option that changes only the heading rank of the table-of-contents title. The issue has been reported to the software vendor as a bug and is assigned to a future release there. This known Quarto structural issue is therefore documented for now and will be reviewed again with every Quarto update.
Information in German Sign Language
Project-specific information about the Prompt Workbook is not yet available in German Sign Language (DGS). The existing link leads to general DGS information provided by Universität Hamburg; it does not explain the content and navigation of this Prompt Workbook. The additional requirements of section 4 BITV 2.0 are therefore not yet fully met for this website.
A project-specific DGS explanation covering the main content, navigation, and accessibility status is planned. A specific publication date has not yet been set.
