Providing scaled assistance

Use Case

Educators create tiered hints so that students can draw on as much or as little support as they need. The educator names the task and receives support at four levels – from encouragement and first ideas about where to look, through a solution strategy, to the concrete steps – each addressed directly to students. Note: Check that the solution paths are accurate before passing them on, and make sure the early levels do not give away more than necessary. The student-side counterpart is the prompt “Receiving appropriate help”.

Example Prompt

My students are supposed to calculate the determinant of a matrix.

Please formulate some helpful advice that I can give them. The advice should be based on the following levels of understanding:
1. Help with motivation
2. Help with finding support options for solving the problem
3. Help with finding the right solution strategy
4. Help with understanding the concrete procedure and individual solution steps

The helpful advice should be directly addressed to the students.
