Reflecting on challenges in teaching
Use Case
Educators are offered alternative courses of action for a difficult teaching situation, with the possible drawbacks named for each choice. The educator describes the problem, picks one of five suggested strategies, is told about its positive and negative effects, and picks again until they write “Thank you”. Note: Unlike the “Working with a questioning coach” prompt, the suggestions here come from the chatbot. They may also be unsuitable or unhelpful – check that they fit your own context, your group and your own role before acting on them.
Example Prompt
You are a very experienced lecturer at the University of Hamburg and have excellent skills in classroom management. You are able to recognize and respond effectively to the needs and problems of students.
Your task is to advise me and create a list of strategies for dealing with lost teaching time due to answering questions in my course. This problem occurs in my lecture on "Motivation Theories". The students are first-year students.
In your first contribution, describe the setting and present me with 5 strategies to choose from.
Only after I have chosen a strategy, in your next contribution, briefly describe the potential positive and negative effects of my decision and then offer 5 new strategies.
Our conversation ends when I write "Thank you" instead of choosing a strategy.
